DISCOVER VULCANO TITANIUM
Inspired by the world’s fastest plane, the titanium-made SR-71 Blackbird, Icona brings its purist, impeccable design language to a whole new level: the design is bold, with beautifully sculpted forms flowing between each sharp surface.
This Italian super sports car redefines the standard in the segment. With its streamlined silhouette, thrilling dynamics and excellent quality, Vulcano Titanium delivers an unparalleled sports car experience. It unites mighty performance with a character perfectly suited to racing as well as daily use; its wide-ranging new technologies work together in a fully integrated fashion.
Created by the Italian design studio Icona, the one-off Vulcano Titanium is a completely unique car, displaying the first full titanium body ever made.
Alongside its surprisingly high performance and pedigree, the design of the Icona Vulcano is a strong evolution of the very advanced form language which was first introduced on the Icona Fuselage concept in 2011 by Samuel Chuffart, Icona’s design director, who says: “Inspiration for the Vulcano came from the most recent airplanes and architectural challenges where we find exquisitely sharp and dramatic silhouettes complimenting sensual surface transitions. This was key to the styling of the Vulcano.”
The aim of the design approach is to express the amazing capabilities of this extremely powerful car, while maintaining harmonious and generous shapes: bringing together Beauty and the Beast.
The very first idea for the Vulcano was to use a front mid-engine layout, and a strongly sculpted body side which would evacuate the hot air from the engine and reduce the air turbulence generated by the wheels. “As different ideas came together, the most challenging design issue which we faced was how to create a balance between power and beauty. When you’re trying to create a feeling of aesthetic harmony, you risk creating too many sweet lines, which decreases the feeling of power. On the other hand, if you make too much of the powerful features which are necessary to a super sports car such as its cooling cutouts and blades which manage the air flow, they become graphically too dominant, and this makes the car less beautiful. The way we found the right balance was using symmetrical signatures for the greatest simplicity” said Samuel Chuffart.
The Vulcano uses a consistent theme of dynamic triangles set in horizontal symmetry, reminiscent of the Icona logo, which balance the dynamism of the volume. To connect the features and divide each part, tight lines compliment the voluptuous shape, enhancing the car’s sensual power.
The bare titanium body was built in Italy by renowned one-off and prototype manufacturer CECOMP, involving more than 10,000 hours of hand-crafted work in its purest form.
Made principally from carbon fiber and trimmed in Poltrona Frau Leather as well as black Alcantara, the high tech interior design has a racing-inspired feel. Comfortably installed in his lightweight carbon fiber seat, the driver is surrounded by screens from cluster to the large touch screen of the console, gathering together functions such as GPS, radio and car diagnostics but also air conditioning. This brings a modern simplicity to the overall design in a sophisticated and refined way.
The cockpit is dominated by innovation. The 12.3-inch TFT display configures a number of different modes and provides the driver with all key information in a digital format. The most important functions such as start, lights, indicators or windows remain analogue with pilot functions such as the aero wing deployment switch on the steering wheel.
Inside the Vulcano, the driver and co-driver enjoy then an iconic simple design, but in a very comfortable space. The slender lines of the instrument panel and the center tunnel are indicative of the lightness of the driver-orientated interior design. The low seats made by world famous Sabbelt with their pronounced contouring and integrated backrests provide the body with excellent grip and support; and they are fully electrically adjustable.
All the final materials, which give the interior its signature, can be extensively customized down to the smallest detail. The “made in Italy” craftsmanship delivers a definitive sense of refinement and high quality.
The complete engineering drivetrain and suspension is the work of famous ex-Scuderia Ferrari engineer director Claudio Lombardi along with Mario Cavagnero, head of Italtecnica and father of some of the most famous world champion race cars. Their combined experience and skills ensure that the Vulcano’s performance is the very best there is, with a Nurburgring Nordschleife capability under 7 min and 20 sec. The V8 supercharged engine of the Vulcano Titanium generates its phenomenal propulsion from a 6.2 liter displacement. It produces a very usable power output of 670 hp and a maximum torque of 820 Nm at 6,600 rpm. With its power-to-weight ratio of 2.38 kilograms per hp, the Vulcano Titanium performance figures are exhilarating: the top speed exceeds 355 km/h and the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is 2.8 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in 8.6 seconds – which offers an indication of its dynamics.
The wheels of the Vulcano Titanium are lightweight forged aluminum, equipped with Pirelli PZERO 285/30 ZR 20 on the front and 355/25 ZR 21 on the rear. The brakes are 6 and 4 piston calipers, the Brembo carbon-ceramic brake system delivering exceptional power.
Thanks to the short ratio paddle shift transmission from Automac Milano, the shift times and clutch calibration are optimized in order to implement the best balance in the distribution of power to the road, key to using maximum power on the road.
This system completely eliminates any traditional gear lever on the center console and uses only paddles behind the steering wheel. The end result is an extreme driving simplicity and a considerable changing speed at the tip of the fingers, without needing to take your hands off the steering wheel.
The geometry of the suspension is designed with respect for traditional solutions: double triangles front and rear combined with coil coaxial springs. The shock absorbers and torsion bars are fully adjustable in rebound and compression which gives a large range of possibilities in order to identify the most suitable calibration for the driving conditions.
The adjustable spring preload allows the alteration of riding height and a better weight distribution all round.
